Imagine if the word ‘submit’ was replaced with the word ‘receive’.
“In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to receive (wisdom, advice, etc.) from your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5
(brackets are mine)
“For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to received from (accepting the benevolence of their man) their own husbands,” 1 Peter 3:5
“Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to receive from your own husbands (we know how hard this is when disappointment sets in) so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,” 1 Peter 3:1
“Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to receive from your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.” 1 Peter 2:18
“Submit yourselves Be open to receiving, for the Lord’s sake, from every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right” 1 Peter 2:13-14
“Submit yourselves, receive then, to from God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7
“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to receive of their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.” Hebrews 13:17
“Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to receive from the Father of spirits and live!” Hebrews 12:9
“Wives, submit yourselves to receive from your husbands (it keeps contempt at bay), as is fitting in the Lord.” Colossians 3:18
“Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to receive its rules(?)” Colossians 2:20
“Now as the church submits to receives from Christ, so also wives should submit to receive from their husbands in everything.” Ephesians 5:24
“Wives, submit yourselves to receive from your own husbands as you do to from the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22
“Submit to receive from one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21
And while there are many more, lets try out just two more:
“The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to receive God’s law, nor can it do so.” Romans 8:7
“Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to receive God’s righteousness.” Romans 10:3
What do you think?
P.S. I began understanding submission as receiving over a year ago in Uganda.
