I was on my fourth ministry trip to Africa and was in a remote village in north-eastern Mozambique. I had preached the evening message and as is common the inviting pastors wanted me to pray for the people.

Now, in the months prior to this trip the Lord had been growing me in conviction about a number of things, one being the priority of teaching people how to pray for themselves and each other. And so this particular evening under a thatch roof and as the evening breezes came through the walls I declined to pray for the people, opting instead to teach the people how to pray for each other. It was a dismal failure.

The Hearts of Humans Meeting the Heart of God

At the beginning of 2009 when it became time to launch what is today Capturing Courage International Ministries I wasn’t sure what to name this thing by which the Lord was leading me so I went to the box of thank-you cards that I had received and kept for the previous decade and began looking to see if there was a common theme. What came through loud and clear was comments regarding courage, “Cyndy when I am near you I have courage to speak my truth” for instance. Again and again people commented on courage and so this is what I named the work I do today.

Yet in the last few weeks I’ve been thinking about this name, wondering if I’ve really explained the core meaning of it, and how it applies to the work of CCIM. In my own heart and mind I know it means the courage to draw close to the Lord and to enter into an honesty and intimacy of which we are often afraid but have I communicated this to others?

Intimacy with God

It is in the quiet of our hearts where we enter into intimacy with God. When there is noise we cannot hear so well.

Our hearts ‘noise’ comes in the form of lies, fears, and judgments.

Lies get in the way of hearing God and of experiencing God because they scream loud. Very loud.

Think about condemning phrases over your life, the self-talk that came from long ago, the beliefs about your worth or the character of God that stand in the way of intimacy.

Enter In

God is big enough for all your troubles and your cares.

Make sure that you are not trying to protect God from you. Put down the arguments and rational why you can’t come closer.

Enter into the presence of God, and everything else begins to fall into place.
